The call center industry is one of the most successful industries in the Philippines today. It was also because of this industry that the Philippines were recognized as the call center capital of the world, making the industry the largest provider of call center services in the world market.
So how did the industry ended up as the largest and most successful BPO (Business Process Outsource) industry in the Philippines? The story of how the call center industry of the Philippines is long, and like many other industries in the Philippines, it also faced a number of difficulties including a sudden downturn of the industry. Here is a brief history about the many successes and failures of the call center industry of the Philippines.
Foundation of the Call Center Industry
The call center industry of the Philippines was founded not as a provider of call center services or business answering service such as order taking service, but as a provider of email response and managing services.
However, the industry had shifted when a number of third-party companies had started to offer live answering services to their clients. Eventually, the demand for email management had completely receded and was replaced by the demand for call center services.
First Rising
The call center industry of the Philippines rose when the demand for its services had also increased. This is due to the many new services being introduced in the market that allowed the industry to expand massively in the Philippine market.
Popular example is Magellan Call Center’s services that aim to offer small and medium businesses the chance to have their own professional call center services, such as Order taking services and reservation services.
Another reason why the industry had risen is because of the increasing number of foreign investors in the Philippines that either outsources their needs to call center companies and agencies in the Philippines, or starts their own call center business in the Philippines. It was also in this time that the call center industry was recognized by the government as the Sunshine Industry of the Philippines.
The Industry’s Fall
After a few years, the call center industry of the Philippines had already penetrated the world market, placing the Philippines as the 2nd largest provider of call center service in the market. However, it was also in that time that global recession had hit the world market, affecting many BPO industries around the world including the call center industry of the Philippines.
At the time, the industry had taken a major downturn due to the fact that majority of its revenue is coming from foreign countries, particularly in the US which was heavily affected by global recession.
The Call Center Capital of the World
However, as global recession slowly receded, the call center industry had slowly grown due to the number of foreign investors returning to the Philippines. Today, the industry had gotten more successful compared to what it was before global recession, in which the industry was recognized as the largest contributor of call center services in the world market, placing the Philippines as the call center capital of the world.
